Well anyway, I hope you're into interviews. This month we pull up a chair and sit on down to hang out at The Poolside (with your host EmJay). Anything you've ever wanted to know about the skimmer of pools might just be answered here. From how he got his name, to more in depth "behind the scenes" with The Poolside. Maybe even a preview of whats to come for Poolboy & Panda. With whatever we discuss, I can assure you that you're in for a treat. Now that we've got all the "checking up" out of the way, lets proceed to the first question.
RJ: To start us out on something simple, how was it that you first found yourself within the Risembool Rangers?
EmJay: Many years ago, I found myself watching episodes of Fullmetal Alchemist on YouTube. (This was back before I knew any better…don’t do it, kids!) Over the course of seven or eight episodes, I noticed that the terms “Vic Mignogna” and “Risembool Rangers” kept popping up all the time. I, eventually, searched for who Vic was and what these Rangers were and, after joining, found myself in the biggest, happiest family on Earth.
RJ: Inquiring minds want to know, how did you get the nickname "Poolboy"?
EmJay: It wasn’t easy; there was a long line of applicants! While in the chatroom one day, a few of the veteran Rangers mentioned how Travis Willingham hadn’t been in the chatroom in, seemingly, forever. Apparently, unbeknownst to me, Travis had been dubbed the Risembool Rangers’ “Official Poolboy” as a running joke. Since he’d been absent for so long, they decided to replace him with the first person they could find…yours truly. Eventually, the nickname stuck.
RJ: "Poolboy & Panda". How was this idea thought of?
EmJay: P&P came about because of our (Hohopapa and myself) love of a chatroom dodgeball game called “Risemball”. Being the sports nut I was/am, I wanted to help expand the only instance of sports I’d ever seen within the Rangers, and Hohopapa was happy to help the game grow as well. Being a regular listener of Mike and Mike in the Morning at the time, I decided an exciting way to help the game was to create a radio show fans of Risemball could listen to as a way to keep up to date on scores, storylines, etc. It was, admittedly, a weak premise, but our chemistry made it work and it ended up being a ton of fun to record and produce.
RJ: Can you tell us what made you want to bring the show out of hiatus after it's original run?
EmJay: We never really wanted to quit! [laughs] When scheduling issues between the two of us made recording the show next to impossible, we decided to take a break. We tried multiple times to revive the show; trying the first time to keep it Risemball oriented, then (after the game faded in popularity following Wolfy’s departure from the Rangers) changing the premise to the otaku-centric talk show it is today. Recording, producing, and listening to P&P was a great experience for both of us, and we wanted to share that with everybody again…including the people who may not have even heard of the first run!
RJ: "The Poolside With EmJay"...How did you think of this idea?
EmJay: “The Poolside” actually started out as part of a tongue-in-cheek running joke we used all the time on P&P. During the original run, we were the only “radio” show in town and had no real plans of expansion. As such, we thought it’d be funny to give ourselves a network to broadcast on. We thought it would be even funnier to call it the “Risembool Rangers Sports Network”, since sports and Rangers/anime are usually the furthest things from one another! Eventually, we fleshed out the gag, adding fake shows that we never planned to record. One of them (mine) was named “The Poolside”.
RJ: Why did you feel the need to make your own radio show?
EmJay: When we decided to make P&P a talk show, we considered following through on actually making a network. Eventually, the idea became bigger than P&P itself…and what followed was the creation of RRN. We wanted to make a place where Rangers/otakus could come and find funny/interesting shows about the things they loved; all sorts of stuff about Japanese media. Before we knew it, we were adding shows like “The Poolside” and articles just like this one!
RJ: If you had to pick, which episode to date is your favorite of “The Poolside”?
EmJay: [laughs] Oh man, that’s a killer! That’s like, ya know, asking me to pick a favorite child! I guess, though, if I had to chose one, it’d come down between episodes 3 and 5. Episode 3 had a great opening and set a standard that we run all the time on the program, “Poolside Quick Hits”. Episode 5 had the “Telemundo” gag, the TV ads rant that I loved, etc. Personally, I like to think that 5 was the best one yet, only because that’s the way produce my show: I try to make every single episode better, in some way, than the one before it.
RJ: If someone wanted to join RRN, how might they go about it?
EmJay: Get in line? Seriously, though, we’re always looking for new talent/hosts/writers. Basically, all they’d need to do is come up with a cool premise for a show or blog (something that most Rangers would want to read or listen to), then make up a pilot of that premise. The pilot would need to be up to par with how every month’s feature would be, since that’s what we’d be using to determine whether or not to add them! Interested Rangers can go here to apply, read the requirements, etc., and any questions can be directed to either Hohopapa or myself by contacting us via the "Hosts" page.
RJ: Anything else you'd like to add?
EmJay: I’d like to tell any prospective listeners out there to go watch episode 1! I promise that over the course of my show, from 1 to 5, you’ll find at least one topic that I’ve covered that you’re at least partially interested in. I’d also like to tell all my regular listeners (both of you) that you have my eternal gratitude for being patient with me during the early part of my show’s history. I know that some things we’ve done don’t work and some things aren’t funny. But I promise to do what I’ve always done: give 110% to every episode! Make sure to keep watching...the best is yet to come!
That's all we've got for this month. I'd like to thank EmJay for taking the time to do this interview with me. Don't forget for all of you loyal fans out there you can catch a new “The Poolside with EmJay" every 23rd of each month. My editorials are released every 4th of each month. If you have any questions or comments for anyone within the network, feel free to send them to us! We'd love to see or receive your feedback on how you think we're doing, what you'd like to see, and maybe anything else you might be able to think of. Until the next editorial, that about wraps it up for me this month. I've got to go have a nice long talk with our director...
